Hurricane City

The Basics
The 50 most storm-prone cities

advertisement
Tropical storms and hurricanes lash the Gulf and East Coast states every season, but some are far more vulnerable. Here's who gets hit the most.

 By MSN Money staff

The Web site Hurricane City used hurricane tracking charts from 1871 onward to rank the relative frequency of storms in the Atlantic Basin.

This list counts both tropical storms and hurricanes that came within 60 miles of the city. By that measure, for example, Grand Cayman is affected by some kind of tropical weather every 2.2 years. That doesnt mean that the city was directly hit, only that it had a brush with tropical weather. Hurricane City used direct hits as a tiebreaker.

While Grand Cayman sees the most frequent visits from tropical storms and hurricanes, the city with the most direct hits since 1871 is Florida City, Fla., directly south of Miami. It had been hit directly 21 times by the end of the 2004 season, when Hurricane City recalculated its numbers. And it took another direct hit from Hurricane Katrina just last week.

Hurricane City's storm profiles of 152 U.S. and Atlantic Basin cities is available here.
